This paper reports on a study of literacy/English teacher educators in four countries. Given expanding concepts of literacy and increasing communication patterns a pedagogy specific to literacy is needed. Ten elements are identified: value and respond to diversity; read, discuss, and analyze a range of texts and genres; create authentic reflection activities; weave theory and practice; build the class into a learning community; use a wide range of pedagogical strategies; integrate digital technology; set assignments to consolidate learning; connect practice teaching and academic program; and participate in local and international communities and organizations. This proposal addresses the first element: value and respond to diversity.
