College Undermatching and the Pathway to College Completion

Abstract

Using ELS dataset, this study examines the effect of college undermatching on college completion, and how college undermatching affects college completion. After considering selection bias, this study found that student who had undermatched are less likely to graduate college within four years, as well as six years than students who had not undermatched. In addition, this study also shows that graduation rate of a prior cohort, and expenditure for student service per students mediate the negative effect college undermatching on college completion. College GPA, and student per faculty ratio does not significantly mediate the effect of college undermatching on college completion.
