Examining the Broader Impact of a Special Education Initiative in Rural Honduras

Abstract

Despite the existence of national policies that allow students with disabilities to be taught in the general education setting in Honduras, implementation has been lacking and ineffective. One reason for this is the lack of knowledge of general education teachers on how to work successfully with students with disabilities. This paper examines the effectiveness of a grassroots approach to fill this gap in the Congrejal River Valley in Honduras by providing professional development for in-service teachers to impart techniques for working with students with both learning and physical disabilities. Through a mixed methods approach, results show benefits to the teachers’ beliefs and pedagogy for students both with and without disabilities.
