Thu, April 27, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

In this dissertation study, grounded theory methodology was used to explore the tenure and promotion experiences of tenured, women of color faculty at predominantly White, public, research institutions in the southeastern United States. The purpose of this study was to describe the institutional structures and climates of the departments and institutions of 23 participants, while honoring the individual characteristics that resulted in the persistence of these faculty members to tenure and beyond. Preliminary results showed department administrators and colleagues played an important role in the experiences of women of color faculty. Final results will inform recommendations for administrators seeking to remove the systemic barriers for women of color faculty in the academy; filling a gap in the current literature.
