Analyzing School Data: Understanding How Education Practitioners Internalize and Apply Introductory Statistical Concepts

Abstract

As current or future education practitioners, students in K-12 administration masters programs will be required to read and interpret existing data reports as well as conduct their own analysis of school data in order to make decisions that ultimately lead to improvement and equal access and opportunities for all. The two purposes of this study are to determine how they: 1) as “students”, conceptualize basic statistical topics and make connections among them, and 2) as “practitioners”, conduct data analysis that provides results and ideas for improving their own school environment. A variety of data sources collected from two cohorts of an introductory statistics course will be examined.
