Core Practices in Music Teaching: A Delphi Expert Panel Survey

Mon, May 1, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 2

Abstract

Recent attempts to decipher the complexities of music teaching and learning have used the pedagogical content knowledge framework to describe the ways teachers understand their disciplines. Subject areas such as math and English have modified this framework to identify core teaching practices - those that novices can begin to master and directly impact student success.

We attempted to develop a preliminary list of core teaching practices in music using a Delphi expert panel approach. Participants completed three rounds of questionnaires in which they rated proposed core teaching practices and suggested additional core teaching practices.

The findings indicate modeling, sequencing instruction, and deconstructing musical concepts are core teaching practices that apply across a wide variety of music teaching.
