Self and Curriculum: What Does Subjectivity Mean in the Context of Curriculum Theory?

Abstract

Biesta (2013) believes that one of the purposes of education should be subjectification, “which has to do with the interest of education in the subjectivity or ‘subject-ness’ of those we educate. It has to do with emancipation and freedom and with the responsibility that comes with such freedom” (p. 4). However, subjectivity can be slippery and difficult to define. This paper explores the meaning of subjectivity in curriculum theory by reviewing curriculum theory literature that addresses subjectivity. I also use the regressive move in currere to explore my self as a way to further understandings of subjectivity. Finally, I theorize on what new materialist notions of entanglement mean for ideas of subjectivity.
