This qualitative interview study examines how teachers experienced reflective instructional coaching as a professional development approach, and what elements of this coaching approach facilitated teacher growth, development, and transformation. Additionally, I examine themes that emerged regarding tensions in current coaching contexts related to emphasis on teacher evaluation. Results are presented as metaphors of coaching as a mirror, window, and doorway, and provide evidence that this reflective coaching approach positively impacted teacher growth, practice, and identity within highly accountable school contexts. Elements of this coaching approach that most contributed to teacher learning and change will also be discussed. Implications for both research and practice of coaching as professional development for improving teacher practice and creating school reform will be presented.
