In this paper we seek to advance the British sociologist Basil Bernstein’s conceptualization of a “radical visible pedagogy” by presenting the theoretical components that we believe are key to developing it and by detailing where they might fit into an agenda for researching pedagogy. Our paper aims first at theoretical development as we draw on Bernstein’s concepts of classification and framing to sketch out the essential elements of a radical visible pedagogy: “a radical realization of an apparently conservative practice” aimed at producing more equitable educational opportunities and outcomes that Bernstein (1990, p. 72) speculated about but did not develop more completely before his death. These concepts inform and frame the research agenda that we set out in our conclusions.
