Identity, Environment, and Support: Predictors of Faculty Contentment With Service Amount and Work Role Balance

Fri, April 28, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

This single institution study examines how faculty’s perceptions of their service load size and balance of teaching, scholarship, and service responsibilities are related to faculty’s social identities, characteristics of their work environments, and perceptions of adequate salary and administrative support. Findings suggest that, while social identity and work environment characteristics contribute to predicting faculty satisfaction with service load and work role balance, satisfaction with salary and administrative support for scholarship and teaching are also strong predictors. Results of this study suggest that by offering features such as administrative support and additional salary for time-demanding service responsibilities, campuses may be able to help faculty better balance service work with other faculty roles.
