Panelist Two
Panelist Two is an Associate Professor in the School of Educational Studies at Claremont Graduate University. Panelist Two’s research interests include: access and success of underserved populations in college, Asian American/Pacific Islanders and Filipina/o students in higher education, and how college environments influence students. Panelist Two will describe how the divide between student affairs practice and research can be bridged through diversity courses. Finally, given her own research interests, she can share findings about Asian American experiences in college settings. Her co-authored and co-edited books include The Other Students: Filipino Americans, Education and Power; Fostering Success of Ethnic and Racial Minorities in STEM: The Role of Minority Serving Institutions and The Misrepresented Minority: New Insights on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and their Implications for Higher Education.
Identity in the Classroom. My social identity/ies play a large role in my classroom. I am transparent about my social identities as I expect the same transparency from my class. I stress reflexivity and positionality. When I use examples, I will speak from my position as a first generation college student, Filipina American, straight/cis gender. But I do not limit it to just those identities if more context is needed in a particular discussion.
