What Factors Influence Test Preparation in the K–12 Context? Evidence From the Measures of Effective Teaching Project

Abstract

With the increasing trend of using student test performance to evaluate teachers and schools, teachers are incentivized to devote instructional time on test preparation. However, little is known about the factors that might influence test preparation in the K-12 settings. Drawing on the Measure of Effective Teaching (MET) dataset, the present study examines what factors influence student test preparation using a three-level modeling approach (i.e., student nested within teachers, and teachers nested within schools). Preliminary results indicate that student-level variables explained most of the variation of test preparation compared to teacher-level and school-level variables.
