Focusing on embodied processes of learning through Barad’s (2007) theory of ‘intra-action,’ this paper cartographically maps the relations within an urban school and surrounding community. I employ feminist new materialist theories and methodologies in order to trouble notions of authentic learning and engagement in urban schools that are built upon colonial dualist thought structures. I will explore improvisational moments of place-making in an urban elementary school as well as discuss an ethics of engagement that is grounded in collective processes of learning.
