Leveraging Information and Communications Technology to Facilitate the Development of Education in Sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract

In our study we synthesized the findings from a collection of theses and dissertations designed to evaluate ICT implementation and offer solutions to existing educational problems in the sub-Saharan communities in which the researchers lived. The contexts in which the research was conducted ranged from field studies of indigenous and nomadic cultures to established school and university environments. A content analysis revealed key findings related to the context in which the research was conducted, the type of problems addressed, and recommended solutions. This research addresses a call for action put forth by UNESCO to collect data relevant to the meaningful use of ICT in educational environments in sub-Saharan Africa that is relevant to its unique cultures and economic conditions.
