The Fire and Emergency Services (FES) industry in Australia is undergoing a process of change, including changes to its current approach to education and training. While the largely vocational trained industry has acknowledged the need for programs from the Higher Education (HE) sector, they have also expressed concern about engaging with HE. This paper reports on a piece of case study research and the novel approach taken through the use of the Landscapes of Practice (LoP) theoretical framework, to better understand FES, the challenges related to FES and HE working together, and how those challenges may be addressed through an FES-HE partnership approach in order to enhance the educational opportunities for the FES industry.
