Authors highlight the impact an Ethnic Studies course with a Critical Service-Learning (CSL) component can have on Students of Color in supporting and helping them navigate their first-year experience in college and beyond. This study analyzes the impact of the course on students’ racial/ethnic identity and social consciousness within a predominantly white institution (PWI). Grounded in critical research, the course provides a space to apply the concepts introduced in class in an analysis of students own educational and CSL experiences. Findings are imperative in understanding how perceptions on SOC transformed from deficit thinking to understanding the educational disparities and leading towards active leadership roles serving their communities. Authors conclude with implications towards a Critical Race Service Learning Pedagogy.
