Multiplicative reasoning is a key concept in elementary school mathematics. Item statistics reported by the NAEP assessment provide the best indicator for how well elementary students understand this, and other, concepts. Yet, little study has been conducted to examine how well NAEP items assess students’ mathematical reasoning. The present study examined the convergent validity of fourth-grade NAEP multiplication items. Results suggest that many such items lack sufficient validity for examining children’s underlying conceptual knowledge. Recommendations and implications are discussed.
