Mon, May 1, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

A key challenge for K-12 educators is to design and evaluate innovative learning experiences that meet the learning needs of diverse students, employ current digital technologies, and respond to changing educational contexts. This research presents key ideas on how the design and building of digital video games was implemented as an innovative teaching and learning approach in four grade 6 social studies classes at a public charter school in Alberta. A design-based research approach was utilized to explore, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of the innovative design and building process in promoting student intellectual engagement, the deep learning of the curriculum content, and the development of 21st century competencies. Key findings and the scholarly significance of the study are summarized.
