"To Be Honest": Black Girls and the Places That We Call Schools

Abstract

Black girls are stymied by many of the race-based policies that impede the success of their male counterparts. Despite this fact, Black boys remain at the center of research efforts and national initiatives aimed to improve their educational outcomes. In this article Black Feminist Theory is used as a methodological framework to illuminate the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of Black girls who attend a large urban high school. In doing so this study acknowledges Black girls’ perspectives as well as their intersecting realities and, hopefully, provides tools to dismantle the systemic nature of oppression prevalent in the places that we call schools.
