Fri, April 28, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

Students from rural areas experience unique challenges when they choose to attend a large research university. This interpretive phenomenology inquiry explores the lived experiences of rural students at an R1 Doctoral University, as defined by The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. This study takes place at a large R1 Doctoral University in the Deep South, where the context of place, race, and gender affect all aspects of students’ lives. The ongoing results reveal the lived experiences of rural students whose stories are marginalized in large-scale quantitative work.
