Rural Latina/o Students and College Access

Abstract

Many rural and small town communities across the country have been rapidly diversifying over the last few decades. Nonetheless, education research focused on diverse student populations still focuses largely on urban or suburban areas in areas that have been home to this diversity for much longer. This paper reports on an ongoing ethnographic study of linguistic minority students (primarily Mexican/Mexican American) at six rural high schools in the Southwestern U.S., focusing on the ways students are supported and hindered by their schools and families in seeking postsecondary education. Implications for policy makers, educators, and administrators are presented.
