Abstract

Since the school desegregation era, schools have struggled to consistently meet the needs of diverse student populations. Stakeholders have argued about whether standardized testing, whole language, phonetic or other approaches would work for helping students learn best. Remarkably, few efforts exist which have taken a set of best practices and created a transformative experience for educators in their quests to successfully reach Black males. This study charts the work professional developers who are university faculty members in their efforts to transform the thinking and teaching practices of teachers toward reaching the needs of Black male students. Findings include teachers believing that transformative spaces makes them more willing to be open about feeling inadequately prepared to reach Black male students.
