Abstract

Assessing the competence of counselors, particularly counselors-in-training, is the primary focus in counselor education. There have been various attempts to measure the true construct of counselor competence; however, a recent review of counselor competence highlighted a lack of clients’ perspective in assessing counselor competence or performance. This study used the Rasch model to develop a new client-rated scale of counselor competence with a sample of adult clients meeting practicum students in counseling program. This paper presented the new instrument’s psychometric properties such as item difficulty, fit statistics, reliability, differential item functioning by using the Rasch analysis.
