International Student Social Capital and Its Effect on Attachment to the Institution

Thu, April 27, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

Higher education institutions are increasingly looking at ways to attract and retain international students for their cultural, academic, and economic benefits, however little data exists about international students’ feelings of attachment to their institution. To provide insights into feelings of attachment, results of a social capital questionnaire distributed to international students at a public, research university were used to examine the relationship between development of social capital and students’ attachment to the institution. International students who reported development of social capital with on and off-campus groups, showed increased feelings of attachment to the institution.
