Navigating Politics and Building Community: Findings From Extended Clinical Practice

Mon, May 1, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

Drawing on data collected through interviews and field notes, this paper shares findings from a qualitative study on an extended clinical practice program in a pre-service teacher education program at a large, urban university. Illustrating the experiences of four Asian, Latina, and White female student teachers, this paper documents the tensions and successes that result from a year-long clinical practice program wherein a university faculty member is embedded in the school site with the teacher candidates. This qualitative study illustrates how school politics and community building were key features of the extended clinical practice model. This paper provides insights for researchers and teacher educators who are seeking to enact ambitious teacher education programs.
