Measuring Changes in Institutional Diversity

Abstract

This paper examines changes in institutional diversity within the United States by replicating the work of Birnbaum (1983) and Morphew (2009). Informed by institutional theory and using IPEDS data, the findings demonstrate how institutional diversity has decreased between 1989 and 2014. The study provides additional empirical evidence of how institutional diversity has declined in recent years and raises questions about the future of the foundational element of American higher education.
