Function of Makerspaces: Learning and Engaging With Others Through Making

Sun, April 30, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Street Level, Stars at Night Ballroom 4

Abstract

Makerspaces are an international phenomenon in which youth and adults gather together to make things on their own time and based on their personal interests. The purpose of this study is to add to scant scholarship on making by understanding how the social identities of 28 makerspace educators and directors around the world shape and define makerspaces. Results highlight that one of the functions of makerspaces, for youth at least, is to provide them with an environment of exploration, free from the constraints typical of school systems.
