What Makes an Exemplary Program in Instructional Design and Technology?

Abstract

This study investigates what faculty in Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) programs perceive as indicators of exemplary programs. We surveyed faculty in the field and asked them to identify the most important indicators of exemplary programs and then to rate their own programs based on these indicators. Based on this data, we created 35 thematic codes, which served as higher level indicators. These themes were analyzed based on how often they occurred and the mean rating of each theme by the faculty. Results of these analyses are presented and discussed. The findings of this study would be of interest to students (both prospective and current), faculty, and administrators of IDT programs.
