This study addresses the effectiveness of a game-based learning environment (GBLE) for improving proportional reasoning in prevocational education, examining the added value of instructional support in the form of faded worked examples. Two conditions were compared: the CGBLE with faded worked examples (n = 49) and without worked examples (n = 44). It was found that the 12- to 15-year-old students’ who were provided with the faded worked examples performed better on proportional reasoning challenges within the environment and on a pen-and-paper proportional reasoning test afterwards; on this test they gave more correct solutions together with more correct equations.
