Hope Among Novice Teachers: A Study of Teachers' Experience in High-Poverty Schools

Abstract

Initial findings of a pilot study indicated that first year teachers experience challenges while working in high poverty schools, and that teachers sometimes enter the profession with a hope to improve educational outcomes for students in high poverty schools. The purpose of the proposed presentation will be to discuss how critical and false hope (Duncan-Andrade, 2009) applies to teachers’ feelings of efficacy and their career decisions within the first five years. The presentation will help school leaders understand how critical hope can be used to retain teachers in high poverty schools.
