Coteaching provides quality transformative learning experiences during student teaching. Coteachers learn alongside one another and through sharing practice and explicating thinking. Coteachers have opportunities to adapt teaching practices to local contexts, learn in and from practice, and develop collaborative skills. After ten years implementing coteaching as a model for student teaching, we find that historical forms of teacher evaluation born from accreditation and other governing bodies tend to be frequently utilized. In this empirically grounded conceptual paper we support the claim that consensus standards drive the development and use of preservice teacher evaluation systems and act as barriers to implementing innovative evaluations of coteaching. The potential of coevaluation practices and tensions inherent in this alternative approach to evaluation are discussed.
