Toward an Eco-Crip Politic: Rereading Places and Moments That Have No Future

Sat, April 29, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 206 A

Abstract

Responding to AERA’s call to examine the relationship between knowledge and action, and specifically Environmental Education SIG’s prompt to “(re)consider environmental education for social justice and sustainability,” this project examines the intersections of critical disability and environmental justice. Through a reading of place as text, this paper reveals the ways that disability and environmental justice find moments of coalition in the excesses of empire-building. It is in these places where the failure of empire drags on the present that an eco-crip space emerges and enables new futures not predicated on continued disabling environmental destruction or the eradication of the disabled body.
