Global Rankings and Institutional Strategy: A Case Study of University Striving in Chile

Sat, April 29, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 206 A

Abstract

The purpose of this case study is to understand whether and how a favorable position in global rankings is associated with striving attributes in a university in Latin America. While Latin American universities appear clustered at the lower rungs of global rankings of research universities, in the most recent editions of the reputation-based QS and THES rankings our case study university appears consistently in the first or second place of the regional listings for Latin America. We conducted interviews and a focus group with faculty and administrators. Preliminary findings suggest that even though PUC seems not to be working directly towards improving its standing in global rankings, its position in them reinforces characteristics associated with striving universities.
