"Queer as Shit": Queering Knowledge and Action in Community-Based LGBTQ Research

Abstract

Knowledge and action are sometimes described as distinct and discrete ideas – perhaps with knowledge leading to action, or action being based on knowledge. We analyze how scholar-activism fits in a knowledge/action dichotomy, and how such a dichotomy might be understood from a queer perspective. In this paper, we draw from our experiences as scholar-activists engaged in community-based research by and with LGBTQ people of color in the U.S. Deep South. Our analysis of these data calls into question how knowledge and action can be understood as distinct, and contextualize this in the concept of praxis. We describe knowing, doing and praxis within a queer context and within community-based research work.
