Abstract

In this essay I examine critical pedagogy and its foundation, via G.W.F. Hegel, Karl Marx, Paulo Freire and Peter McLaren. My analysis of seminal works, the genesis for pedagogy of revolution, posit a distinction between what can be learned in the classroom and what can be realized in an authentic human experience. As the above philosophers suggest, we are not damned to, from birth, pedal the hamster wheel that is the social relations of power and production. Instead experience and dialogical social relations with material realities of the world, mentorship and the crises of becoming, imply a moral awakening to as Freire might suggest, a re-articulation of human agency as we accept the possibility of becoming more fully human (1970).
