Abstract

This study examines urban effective leadership amongst African-American principals in their active collaboration in an ethical manner. Focusing on school leadership relations between principals, teachers, and students this study examines
the potential of their active collaboration around ethical matters
to enhance the quality of student performance. The sample comprises of twenty-five African American principals in public schools- ten elementary, six middle and nine high schools in Virginia with both an urban location and a high poverty concentration asked to resolve four ethical dilemmas and then observed for a period of five days each. The study finds that urban effective leadership is a necessary but insufficient condition for ethical leadership and the influence on school performance, measured by student achievement, increases.
