This paper pursues two objectives: 1) Investigating the specific combination of factors facilitating the transition of Mexican students to college in a northeastern state. 2) Examining the extent to which Gonzalez et al.’s (2003) College Opportunity Framework is applicable in a northeastern state. The College Opportunity Framework is present in a northeastern state; students accumulated multiple sources of social capital facilitating their path to college. Further, male and female students accumulated social capital, a significant proportion of students needed multiple sources of social capital in order to counteract institutional neglect, and local context influenced the sources of social capital available.
