This paper forwards an interdisciplinary conceptual framework that knits together knowledge from domains of literacy, education and neuroscience to more fully understand the learning opportunities made available to readers of literary narratives when they adopt an aesthetic stance. This framework calls for both the diversification of literary narratives in the classroom and for a renewed reverence for the aesthetic in service of social justice.
