Perceptions of Rural Principals in a Southern State: Equating Christianity With Social Justice Leadership

Mon, May 1, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

This qualitative multi-site case study examines Southern, rural, high school principals’ perceptions of socially just leadership in regards to LGBTQ students. Principals from the study equated their Christian faith to socially-just leadership. This presentation contributes to conversations on the praxis of social-justice leadership (Furman, 2012). The study has implications for preparation programs to challenge perceptions and to build knowledge and practices for social justice leadership (Capper, Theoharis, & Sabastian, 2006) through guided, reflective processes embedded in pre-service programs.
