This paper explores the reaches of cultural production within arts education research. Paul Willis’ rhetoric of cultural production and notion of symbolic work are applied to the analysis of an art piece created by the author, in conversation with the typologies of photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher. The author’s piece is considered first as art, then as symbolic work, in order to tease out the nuances of the two frameworks and their implications for educators and researchers working in and through the arts.
