The Feeling Subject? Complexifying the Human, Cosmopolitanism, and the Purpose of Education Through Emotion

Mon, May 1, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

When emotion is used in intellectual arguments throughout educational planning and research, it is frequently left unquestioned. Yet, emotion is a construction, not a given. It also organizes the human subject and influences what the human attends to when planning its own education in the vein of communal goals, vis-à-vis cosmopolitanism’s education of particular kinds of people (Popkewitz, 2008). Because emotion organizes and is organized, this paper aims to question its invention, use, and effects to better understand unrecognized elements of human education. By engaging in this questioning, we enhance the conceptual rigor of our work aimed at advancing educational environments and the “human” elements they allow or disallow to be present.
