Interdisciplinary Case Studies and Engaged Peace Education: Using the Models of Teaching to Deepen Learning

Sat, April 29, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

Case study analysis has many advantages when topics are complex, difficult, and emotionally charged (Timpson & Doe, 2008). The challenges for peace education requires interdisciplinary or trans-disciplinary thinking. Beginning in Fall 2009, case studies have been used to explore aspects of diversity along with other complex concepts (i.e., sustainability, conflict resolution, peace and reconciliation) to deepen student learning in both undergraduate and graduate classes at a research university. Written evaluations, observations, videotapes and transcriptions of classroom interactions were analyzed across several semesters. Case studies now serve as the foundation for a funded curriculum change project that promotes sustainable peace and development in the impoverished, war-torn country of Burundi.
