Future Teachers' Wonderful, Freaky Data: Data "What a Wonderful Idea" That "Really Freaked Me Out"

Mon, May 1, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

Pre-service teachers shared concerns and thoughts about Data Driven Decision-Making (DDDM). Participants responded to the Stages of Concern Questionnaire and a prompt. This topic is under-researched and important as it may inform teacher education programs regarding how to better prepare data literate future educators, required for accreditation (e.g., CAEP). Participants were concerned about their DDDM competence, but were interested in developing these skills and wanted to work with others to improve. After a short training unit, they reported moving from negative views of DDDM to seeing it as useful/beneficial/important. Participants reported negative perceptions of DDDM began when they were K-12 students, and wished K-12 teachers had actively engaged them with classroom data (e.g., setting goals).
