On the learning society backdrop, several and deep transformations have invested school systems, and often, these transformations have been catalyzed by assessment and evaluation, considered as a set route in improvement processes. Assessment represents a strategic element in order to understand the criticalities of an educational system and to improve educational policies because it allows to identify what are weakness points and to define the improvement margins of action. After an excursus on the rationale and on the role of large-scale assessment in the Italian school system, the present paper focuses on teachers’ perceptions about the large-scale assessment program administrated by INVALSI, the National Agency for the Assessment and Evaluation of the Italian School System.
