Abstract

With focused attention to part-time teachers, this paper examined the effects of teacher and school factors of teacher turnover by employing a two-level hierarchical generalized linear modeling to the USA national data of the 2007-08 School and Staffing Survey. The analytical models included teacher part-time status, the level of dissatisfaction in teaching, and age at the teacher level, and student/teacher ratio, the percentage of minority students, school sector, and school level (i.e. elementary) at the school level. The results showed that for full-time teachers, minority percentage, school sector, school level, and school SES have a significant effect on the rate of attrition. Part-time teachers are five times more likely to leave while controlling for satisfaction, experience, and other school factors.
