Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to suggest a model for language shared in classrooms between teachers and students called receptive discourse. This model of discourse is described, justified in terms of theory regarding language and thinking, and substantiated through examples of ways teachers can engage in receptive discourse with their students. A question of what possible consequences exist when students’ thinking, as they express it in words, is regarded by their teachers as being “wrong” served as the starting point for this investigation.
