The objectives of this study were: (1) to determine a robust motivational profile in a nationally representative sample of 4964 students, and (2) to examine if membership in the motivational profiles predicts performance and future intentions. Cluster analysis revealed four clusters: low intrinsic and low extrinsic motivation (13.9%); low intrinsic but high extrinsic motivation (25.6%); high intrinsic and high extrinsic motivation (25.5%) and high intrinsic motivation but low extrinsic motivation (35%). Multilevel analysis showed that students that are in the high intrinsic and high extrinsic motivational profile not only performed better but were also more likely to have the intention to: take more math courses, major in math and aspire to a math-related career, than those in the other profiles.
