This paper examines connections between one adolescent’s writing practices through a connected learning lens (Ito et al., 2013). Data derive from a four-year longitudinal inquiry with Laura, a young woman who writes for a variety of reasons. The data corpus includes interview transcripts, email exchanges, and numerous artifacts documenting Laura’s writing for school, online, as a budding novelist, and in service of her theatre work. Using Erickson’s (1986) analytic induction, assertions based upon these data are being developed and tested. Findings reveal the connected nature of Laura’s writing as supported by academics, interests, and her peers. Taking a connected learning approach to constructing Laura’s case has the potential to continue blurring boundaries that separate sites of literacy learning.
