This study examines a dynamic and ongoing collaboration among secondary science and ESOL teachers, Latino/a students, and their accompanying families in a school-based informal science learning setting. The research builds upon an emancipatory paradigm to understand STEM teachers’ learning with emergent bilingual students and their families. We offer insights into secondary science teachers’ goals in attending bilingual Steps to College through Science family workshops and how this experience produced teachers’ orientations related to Freire’s notion of humanizing education. Findings from the research can inform teacher education and research efforts to foster teachers gaining a more profound understanding of their emergent bilingual students and families to support diverse students’ active engagement and persistence in science learning.
