Understanding International Student Leadership Self-Efficacy: Which Student Involvement Activities Are Impactful?

Abstract

While many studies have examined international student challenges on American college campuses, few have empirically analyzed the impact of their student involvement on campus. From a multi-institutional survey and a national sample of almost 3500 international students, this study utilizes Astin’s College Impact Model and Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory to examine the impact of student involvement on the development of leadership self-efficacy among international students. While leadership self-efficacy has been studied extensively among other student subpopulations, no other study has used this framework to analyze the experiences of international students. While there are limitations to the research design, the findings provide explanation and understanding into the student activities that are most impactful for the leadership development of international students.
